Surgical bed, is also known as an operating table or surgical table. It is used in hospital operating rooms and other health institutions undertaking surgery. Surgery bed can either be stationary or mobile. A mobile bed is often used to move patients from room to room. The operating room bed is used in urologic, cardiothoracic, bariatric, orthopedic, and robotic procedures. Typically, med surg bed has adjustable height capabilities for the head, feet, and entire bed. It also has adjustable side rails. Some medical surgical beds have electronic buttons to control the bed.

What to consider when choosing a surgical bed

First, look at the bed’s electronic capabilities. A surgical bed with power features allows a patient to adjust the foot, head, and bed frame with a press of a button. The hospital surgical bed can be fully electric or semi-electric. Second, look at the weight capacity and size of the bed. Ensure the bed can support a patient's weight. A patient might endure severe injuries if the bed frame caves because of excess weight. The third is the side rail options. Most beds either have full-length or half-length side rails. Full-length side rail with surgical bed pads can protect patients from injuries resulting from seizures. Half-length side rails offer support to patients as they move and reposition themselves on the bed. Lastly, are the bed’s footboard and headboard options. The foot and headboard enhance the bed’s comfort.

Types of surgical bed

Surgical beds are categorized into 3. Orthopedic table, which is used for orthopedic surgeries. It is easily adjustable with precise control. The general surgical table is adapted for use in different types of surgeries. It is a common surgical bed for home. Lastly is the radiolucent imaging tables. As a bed surgery, it is adapted for less invasive surgeries that need fluoroscopy.
